What is mindfulness and how does it work?

Mindfulness is learning how to focus on the present moment. By doing this, it has been scientifically proven to help a child’s emotional state which in turn can enhance academic achievement. Mindfulness is a life skill, not a therapy, and provides children with a set of tools which can be used in everyday life.
Mindfulness practices involve:
-
Learning how to fully direct your attention, either on specific parts of the body, or on thoughts in the mind.
-
Recognising habitual reactions to stress and how to deal with difficult situations in a more rational way.
-
Understanding our autopilot behaviour and learning to step out of it.
-
Focusing in on the breath and using it as an anchor.
